Take Action, Don't Be Academic

"READ This one's a no-brainer, but you'd be surprised at how many successful people check their outside interests at the door once they put their name and title on it. Keep your worldview as wide as possible. If you're in the widget business, it's not enough to know widgets. Celebrate your well-roundednessl Stay on top of public events and economic developments. Read at least two daily newspapers all the way through. Always have a book going. Learn a little bit about an awful lot and an awful lot about precious little. Consult your appropriate trade journals. Grow through the books and publications you read, the people you engage, the challenges you meet and master."

Bill Rancic. You're Hired. How to Succeed in Business and Life. (pp. 98-99). HarperBusiness.

There is some prevailing belief that you shouldn't be academic once you're out of university - you should be present and ready to act and not be in an idealistic, fairytale land instead.

There is some merit to insisting on pragmatism at every level of life, but at the same time, some time should be allocated for an individual's continued personal growth. That time should be sufficient to ensure that a person is not stagnant or plateauing in his professional performances.

You wish for yourself to have some avenue or another to continue to be a better person.

Whatever position you are in in your current life, you have to be willing to expand your horizons, to improve yourself all the time, if only to keep up with current events and technological developments. Failure to do so will make you not only stagnate or plateau, but fall behind.

What do you think? Does this quote from Bill Rancic make any sense? Will you continue to read our reviews on personal finance and investing books, to return to our website on occasions, to determine which recommended book is right for you?
